UNIT 1
THE PLAYERS AND THE BAND
ACTIVITY 1 - DISCUSSION
Hello. My Name Is...
Get to know your bandmates.

STUDENT/PLAYER GUIDE

Your mission is to create a stage name and persona.

Step 1: Invent a character name for yourself based on your personal interests, music preferences, and vibe. Write it down.

Step 2: Play two truths and a lie! Write down your answers to the following questions - but make one a lie that's hard to guess:

  • What music makes you wanna turn up the volume?
  • What music makes you wanna turn down the volume, maybe even all the way off?
  • What's an instrument you have played before?

Step 3: Share your answers from Steps 1 and 2 with your bandmates. Be sure to share some KSHH feedback.

Step 4: Add your character name and two truths (and the lie) to the band's slides. Include an image or avatar for your character and a short fictional biography.

TEACHER/PRODUCER GUIDE

  1. With this Activity, and almost all Activities to follow... Explain this is just the intro to this challenge: players can spend more time crafting a detailed name and persona on their own, and stage names can be changed.
  2. Introduce the activity and confirm all players understand the steps.
  3. Role based model: Teachers can think of their bands in three categories that should rotate with each day/Activity:
  4. ‍Demo band: This band will help to demonstrate the Activity. The teacher leads them by following the facilitation guide. Responses and KSHH are verbal, and students in the other bands are watching, listening, and learning what they need to do. Students can ask questions at the end of the demo.‍
  5. Showcase bands: At the end of the Activity, the teacher will select one (or more) band(s) to show their results. Lead by the teacher as needed, players get the opportunity to present their efforts to the class, and to give and receive KSHH feedback. In order to ensure diligence during the student work period, we recommend that bands don’t know if they’ll be showcased or not.‍
  6. Other bands: For bands who are not demonstrating or showcasing for this Activity, they’ll need to ‘discuss’ responses and KSHH by texting in a teacher authorized location, (e.g. the LMS, or their band’s Soundtrap chat window, or a running Google doc for questions/comments). All bands should be directed to capture their KSHH feedback for their bandmates on the appropriate slide in their band’s Google slides. This way, teachers have a record of KSHH for assessment purposes.
  7. Run steps 1 and 2 within 5 minutes (set a timer).
  8. Invite each player to update their band’s Google slides with their responses. (Students will need to be numbered 1-4 in the slides.)
  9. Nominate a player to share their character name and their answers. Invite the group to guess which answer is the lie.
  10. Nominate the next person to share, and repeat until everyone has a turn.
  11. Model KSHH feedback by sharing something kind, specific, honest, or helpful with each player. Invite others to do the same with at least one other player.
  12. Invite each player to update their band’s Google slides with KSHH feedback‍
  13. What is a “round of KSHH”? Player 1 says “This is what I did…” Player 2 says “I really like how you did that Player 1” (KSHH), and then Player 2 presents - “This is  what I did…” Player 3 gives Player 2 KSHH, and presents what they did. This repeats until the last player gives KSHH and presents what they did, and Player 1 gives them KSHH. Each player has now given and received positive feedback!
