Share compositions to celebrate outcomes and achievements!

STUDENT/PLAYER GUIDE

It's showtime! Take the stage and step into the spotlight. Share your song (and video) with other bands at your school and celebrate each other's achievements.

Step 1: Prepare your video for a world premier. You can share a link to the video file, or stream playback for a live showcase.

Step 2: Prepare to share KSHH feedback (kind, specific, helpful, honest) as other bands share their compositions and videos.

Step 3: Recognize and celebrate individual and group achievements! Be generous with your appreciation.

TEACHER/PRODUCER GUIDE

  1. The goal of this activity is for players to showcase their compositions (and videos) and to celebrate outcomes and achievements. Consider how you might transform the occasion into a party or concert-like event.
  2. Play the role of a DJ or emcee by curating the playlist of band compositions in advance. If you host a live stream event for bands, then consider announcing each band as they step onto the stage - virtual or actual. Invite band members to reveal their stage names with the class either verbally or through chat. Allow some time to appreciate band and player names.
  3. Optimize video stream settings for smooth audio.
  4. After each band's music video performance, invite KSHH feedback from the audience. Consider how you might play a role - like a music journalist - who interviews each band about their process, how they feel about the outcome, and to speculate about what's next in their (fictional) career in music.
  5. Consider how you might recognize accomplishments by individuals and bands with awards. For example, you might create certificates in slides that reference achievement in rhythm, chords, bass lines, melodies, remixing, video storytelling, collaboration, creativity, or KSHH feedback. We recommend focusing on specific examples of player or band accomplishment, rather than focusing on comparative or competitive factors. Avoid using raw scores or a leaderboard in how you visualize or justify merit.
  6. Give each band an equal amount of time in the spotlight. Each band should have one full play each. As time permits, consider a round of encore replays. Or, if there's only a bit of time remaining in class, then consider allowing bands an opportunity to discuss their experiences as performers.
  7. If possible, allow players access to the collection of videos so they can review as they please after class.
